Masks, Guidelines, and How to Safely Get Outside!

May 8, 2020

As the days grow longer and more sunshine peeks through in between Spring showers, we are all ready to stretch our legs and enjoy the natural beauty of our community.

Here are the most recent guidelines and ways to stay safe while getting outdoors.

Wearing Masks in Public

Today, a new executive order goes into effect requiring everyone to wear face masks in public – indoors or outdoors. There are exceptions for children under 2 years old and for those whose health would be impacted by wearing a mask. Our open spaces are included in this order, so make sure you are wearing a mask during your walks. The most up-to-date guidance is always available on the RI Health Department’s website.

If you don’t have a pre-made face mask, you can use a scarf, bandana, or DIY one. Here’s some info from the CDC about how to DIY a mask at home and here’s a video on how to sew your own mask.

Stay-At-Home Order Lifts

The governor’s stay-at-home order lifts on Saturday, which means some non-essential businesses can reopen. Avoid areas where many people are gathering and make sure to maintain a safe social distance wherever you are. Go for walks in your neighborhood and enjoy nature in your backyard!

WAYS TO (SAFELY) BE OUTSIDE:

  • Go for a walk in your neighborhood with someone you live with, practicing social distancing.
  • Sit outside in a yard, garden, or on your stoop to enjoy the sunshine.
  • Open your window to enjoy the natural sounds of birdsong.
