Newport Open Space Invitational Charrette
September 20, 2014
This invitational design charrette is created to bring professionals from around the state (and country) together to brainstorm with us about the future of Newport’s parks and open spaces.
The charrette will start on Saturday morning with breakfast and a trolley tour of Newport’s parks, coastline and other open space. After lunch, we will ask attendees to work in groups to tackle some of the important questions that will frame the two-year open space planning initiative and bring forward innovative, multi-disciplinary ideas and best practices.
Newport’s parks and open spaces are defined by urban, coastal, and historic conditions. Parks, beaches, boulevards and walks intersect with historic sites, community needs, wildlife habitat and sea level rise. How do we plan for the future of our open spaces? How can we balance the needs of our residents and visitors with protection of our shoreline, historic harbor neighborhoods and native wildlife habitat? How can these considerations inform a planning process that is inclusive, collaborative, and creative?
