Open Space: A look at the possibilities
January 28, 2016
Thank you to Sean Flynn of the Newport Daily New for covering Newport Open Space Partnership’s public meeting. Your ideas will help create a shared vision for the future of Newport’s open spaces.“The colored architectural drawing on the big screen showed a scenic shared pedestrian and bike trail running next to the Old Colony railroad track in Newport, looking south from Admiral Kalbfus Road between the Fourth Street Diner on the left and buildings on the right. It contrasted with a dreary photo of what the area looks like now.
Jason S. Hellendrung, principal of Sasaki Associates Inc., of Watertown, Mass., on Thursday night showed a series of illustrations indicating what the city could look like in the future and what it looks like now to an audience of about 100 people gathered in the cafetorium of Pell Elementary School. The presentation was part of the second community meeting on the development of a Newport Tree, Park and Open Space Master Plan, for which Sasaki is the consultant.
The ongoing effort, led by the Newport Open Space Partnership, began last summer and gives residents the opportunity to help create a vision of parks and open space for the next century. Organizers say this is the first citywide open space planning effort since Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. published “Proposed Improvements for Newport” in 1913, which led to the creation of Miantonomi Park, Almy Pond and other green spaces in the city.” Read the rest of the article at Newport Daily News’ website.
